The Emecole Home Ecosystem

Soil Gases and Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring soil gas that is emitted as radioactive material is broken down in the soil under and around our homes.  It is the number one cause of lung cancer in non smoking Americans.  Studies suggest it can be especially harmful to young children and even cause damage to a fetus, but there are steps we can take to remediate radon to safe indoor levels. It must be sealed from your home and ventilated.  Visit our radon prevention page for more information and ways you can protect your home ecosystem from the dangers of radon gas.

Black/Toxic Mold

Mold can have a very negative affect on a home ecosystem.  According to the EPA, mold in a home is most commonly caused by excess moisture from concrete, crawlspaces, humidifiers and foundation cracks.  They report the only way to control mold is to control moisture.  Molds need a food source, warmth (between 40 and 100 degrees) and moisture to survive.  By eliminating just one of the three, mold will not be able to live.  Molds such as Strachybotrys Atra, commonly referred to as black mold, can be very dangerous.  They cause nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, skin irritation, sore throat, rhinitis and trigger asthma symptoms.  Some People are more sensitive to mold than others including children and the elderly and can have much more severe reactions such as fever and lung infections.  According to BlackMoldRemovalGuide.com, black mold is responsible for more than 100 types of lung conditions, but worst of all, Strachybotrys Atra can cause respiratory bleeding which can be fatal to infants.
