Save Thousands-No need to replace sections of concrete pool deck and the pool skimmer.

Pool Skimmers and Leaking Problems Both Emecole technicians and pool repair professionals agree that a very common water loss problem associated with built in concrete pools and spas is caused by a leaking skimmer. What we do not agree on is the best method to stop a leaking skimmer. Emecole has developed a system for lining the area behind the skimmer with a flexible material creating a permanent dam. Repair professionals would rather install a new skimmer, removing a section of the pool deck during the process. The costs run easily into the thousands.

What do skimmers do and why do they leak? Skimmers are usually made of plastic and built into the side of a pool at the water line. Water and debris from the pool surface is directed through a moving door called a weir. The debris is collected in a removable basket and the water is re-circulated. Your pool may have one or more skimmers depending on the pool size.

The interface of the skimmer at the pool wall creates the most opportunities for leaking problems to happen. The plastic skimmer face can separate from the pool tile, plaster, concrete, or coping. This failure can happen for many reasons including normal settling, shrinkage, differences in expansion rates due to temperature fluctuations, and freeze damage. The Emecole skimmer repair process injects a two part liquid which, when mixed together, rapidly expands into a flexible foam. The foam fills any voids in the area between the skimmer and the concrete. By filling this void with a flexible material the need for future maintenance is virtually eliminated. Forget about temporary caulk and putty repairs lasting a couple of years. Seal the skimmer once and for all.

Testing for Leaks - Not sure if your pool is leaking or if water loss is due to evaporation? Place a bucket of water next to your pool and mark the water level in both the bucket and the pool. Check the water level after 24 hours. If your pool loses more water than the bucket then there's a leak.

A simple method for detecting a leaking skimmer is a dye test. Either purchase a dye test kit or make your own using a squeeze bottle filled with food dye. After turning off the pump and waiting until the water is calm, lower your hand with the dye bottle into the water near the skimmer. You need to do this without stirring up any currents, squeezing out small amounts of dye along the area and very close to the skimmer face. The dye will be drawn into any leaking areas and not the weir like smoke in a draft.

Use the same method to check for leaks along tile lines, lights, pipe openings, drains, or any area you suspect may be cracked or leaking. While not part of this discussion, Emecole also offers low pressure injection pool repair kits for these applications along with concrete deck control joint and crack sealants.

Skimmer Repair Procedure The Emecole Skimmer Repair Kit contents include an injection port, 2 cartridges of Emecole 2-part Pool Foam, 1 dual syringe of Emecole 455 port adhesive, along with injection accessories, instructions and a CD demonstrating the repair process. Additional tools not supplied but required are a caulk gun, a drill with ¼” bit, and paper towels.

Drain the pool level below the skimmer level and turn off the circulation equipment.

  1. Drill one ¼” hole in the skimmer throat.

  2. Empty 2/3 of the Emecole 455 dual syringe onto a piece of card-board. Mix thoroughly with the mixing stick and apply a small amount along the bottom base of the injection port. Place the port over the hole and then use the balance of the mixed adhesive to past over the port base.

  3. While waiting for the adhesive to cure about 10 minutes, remove the white nut and cap from the Emecole 102 cartridge. Place the static mixer on the cartridge threading the white nut securely to hold it in place. Attach the clear flexible hose assembly to the mixer and the other end to the port.

  4. Place the cartridge in your caulking gun and then very slowly inject about 2/3 of the tube watching it enter the skimmer throat. Wait a few minutes to allow the liquid urethane to foam adding more as required until you observe the foam sealing around the skimmer face. Use the second cartridge if necessary.

  5. Use paper towels to soak up any excess foam. After about an hour remove the port and use the remaining Emecole 455 to plug the injection hole.

Your skimmer repair is complete.

Swimming Pool Repair using Urethane/Epoxy Crack Injection

Urethane foam and/or epoxy injection is the most effective and economical method for swimming pool repair, including leaks emanating from concrete cracks and skimmers. How do concrete cracks in swimming pools take place? A swimming pool is a large man-made container full of water, constructed in soil that typically will expand and create stress on the pool foundation. Many times the setting is chosen based on relaxation and luxury, not where the surroundings are most stable. So whether you're a homeowner that just purchased a house in need of swimming pool repair, or a professional swimming pool repair contractor, take a look at our crack injection system. Chances are we can save you money and introduce to you a very effective and time saving concrete repair method!
